The diagnostic Application of Echoencephalography for Detection of Intracranial Lesions

Abstract
The echoencephalography has been used for many years as a convenient diagnostic procedure to detect the space occupying lesion because of simplicity and harmlessness in neurosurgery.
Inspite of poor accuracy for the infratentorial tumors, the lesion along the auditory meatomeatal line can be detected by the echoencephalography with high accuracy.
The results of echoencephalographic examination by Ekoline 20 Ultrasonoscope (Smith Kline Co.) for 40 normal persons and 237 patients were presented.
In the 90% of normal persons the echoencephalogram showed normal midline echo but in the 10% of them it showed midline shift less than 2 mm.
The echoencephalogram showed midline shift over than 2 mm in the 94% of the supratentorial space occupying lesions, however it has little diagnostic value for the detection of the infratentorial space occupying lesions and direct visualization of tumor or hematoma echo.
